‘I was left to care for two kids after their parents failed to come home’

A babysitter recently shared a harrowing tale on Reddit about a job that seemed to stretch on forever.
She was tasked with looking after two children while their parents attended a wedding. The kids, a 13-week-old baby boy and his 2-year-old sister, were no trouble at all, and she had them tucked in by 7:30 p.m.
The wedding was scheduled to end at 11 p.m., but at 10:15 p.m., the parents texted her asking if she could stay until midnight, to which she agreed.
However, when midnight came and went without any sign of the parents, she began to worry. She sent a text asking for an update but received no response.
By 1 a.m., she still hadn’t heard anything and started checking social media for news of car accidents. At 2 a.m., with the parents still not home and after about 15 unanswered calls, she contemplated calling the police.
“I wanted to call the police at that point but also didn’t want the kids woken up and taken out of the house at 2 a.m. I was hoping that the parents would walk in, and although I’d be angry, at least they’re fine, but again, that didn’t happen.”
Finally, at 5 a.m., she decided to report the parents missing to the police.
“The police showed up at 5:22 a.m. and took a statement from me. I was asked for the parents’ numbers, and the police asked if I could stay with the kids until they could figure out what exactly they’re going to do.”
As this was happening, neighbors began to gather around. At 5:48 a.m. , the parents finally arrived, only to be met by the police. The mother rushed out, fearing something had happened to her children.
They explained that their phones had run out of battery and they didn’t know how to navigate home from their location.
She penned:”I was fuming! I called them irresponsible and the sh—–t parents I’ve ever worked for. I demanded she pay me on the spot, and I left.”
“I got a super long message about how this is my job and I’m a huge a—–e for disrespecting them and calling the police. She felt like I could’ve left them with the neighbors or called the emergency contacts, not the police.”
The comments section was filled with support for her, with many agreeing that the parents’ excuse was weak.
One user commented:”Who in 2024 would let their phone die, especially as a parent of two very small children and when they know they need their phone to get directions to home.”
“Both of their phones died and they spent six hours trying to find their way home? I seriously doubt that. They are wildly irresponsible and disrespectful. You shouldn’t babysit for them again.”
